War on the Homefront:
Connecticut Goes to War, 1860-1945

Guideposts

To find all images in the CHO database relating to war, perform a simple search for the word “war.” If you aren’t interested in war memorials, you may want to restrict your search by searching for “war NOT monument.” Be sure to indicate that you want this to be a Boolean search in the “Search By” box at the right bu selecting “Boolean” from the pull-down menu.

If you are interested in a particular war, try a keyword search using the name of the war in which you are interested, for example “Civil War” or “World War II.” This will find images specifically associated with these wars. Another approach would be to return to the section of the journey dealing with the war you’re interested in. Open the “Full Record” for one of the images. Towards the bottom of the record, you should find the name of the war listed as a subject heading. By clicking on this subject heading, you will find other records relating to the same war.

If you are interested in images of the home front during a particular war, limit your search by date. This will find images from the period during which the war was taking place, including those that do not directly relate to the war itself. They may help you understand people’s lives during these periods. To limit your search by date, click on “Limit” and then select “Range.” Type in the start and end dates of the war you’re looking for, for example “1861” and “1865” for the Civil War. Be sure to set the limits BEFORE you construct the search itself. Setting the limits will wipe out your prior search.

You may also find war-related subjects by browsing the subject index. Go to “Browse by Subject.” Under “War” you will find headings such as “War bonds” “War memorials” “War rallies” and “warships.” Click on any subject heading to see the related records. Other good areas to browse for material of this sort include “Armed forces” “Army” “Navy” and so on.

Although most of the images in CHO are images OF Connecticut, you will find a few war-related images depicting Connecticut troops in other locations such as Civil War camps and battlefields.
