Tiger is the preferred source for street names. Do NOT use GNIS
as the source of street names even though you can find street
names in GINS.
If
you have information about a street name and the name of the
town or city where the street resided or resides:
- Verify the street name
in the TIGER database http://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/gazetteer.
- Enter the street number
or/and name in the "Place name 1" box;
- Enter the name of the
town or city in the "Place name 2";
- Select tiger from the
drop-down list.

name of the county in the "Place name 3".
| 651 |
_7 |2 tiger
|a Weatogue Road |z Weatogue
|z Litchfield County. |
There
is another Weatogue in Hartford County.
If you are not sure about a street name:
- Search in the TIGER
database http://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/gazetteer.
Or
- Search MapQuest http://www.mapquest.com/;
- If the street name is
not found in the above sources, enter the street name and
select "local" from the drop-down list.
If an image has multiple streets, use multiple 651 fields. You
can enter up to 4 street names in 4 repeated 651 fields in ImageServer.
You can add more street names by adding more 651 fields in the
cataloging module.

If
you don't have a street name, but you know the name of the
town, city, or county, see below.
If you have information about a town, city or a county:
- Verify the name in GNIS
http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html
- Enter the name in the "Place
name1".
- Select "gnis"
from the drop-down list.
- If there are more than
two towns or cities with the same name, enter the county

If no information available for the place name, make a guess,
and put at least a county name in the field. Make a note in
the 500 field or in the description.

|
In general, do not use qualifiers unless the lack of them could
cause confusion.
If
a place name is also a name of a cape, a dam, a lake, etc.,
you need to use the feature type in GNIS to qualify the place
name by putting the feature type in parentheses.
| 651 |
_7
|2 gnis |a Leetes Island (cape)
|
| 651 |
_7 |2 gnis |a Long
Pond |z New London County. |
Do
Not use (populated place) as an identifier assuming all place
names without an identifier are populated places. However,
for a place name containing "River" or "Lake",
etc., use (populated place) to distinguish it from the real
river or lake name. (Minutes
2/27/01)
For example, if Twin Lakes is a place:
| 651 |
_7
|2 gnis |a Twin Lakes (populated place)
|
If Twin Lakes is a lake:
| 651 |
_7
|2 gnis |a Twin Lakes. |
If Deep River is a place:
| 651 |
_7
|2 gnis |a Deep River (populated
place) |z Middlesex. |
If Deep River is a river:
| 651 |
_7
|2 gnis |a Deep River |z
Middlesex. |
Do not use (stream) as an identifier for river, lake, etc.
that clearly indicate the feature.
| 651 |
_7
|2 gnis |a Compounce Lake.
|
| 651 |
_7
|2 chs |a Wamgumbaug River.
|
| 651 |
_7
|2 chs |a Mystic River.

If you didn’t find the street name in TIGER, check the following
books:
- Connecticut Place Names
- Indian Place Names
If you find the name in these two books, enter the name and
select "chs", or "ipc" in the drop-down
list accordingly.
If you had no luck finding the name in these resources, stop
looking! Catalog the image and send a message to
Patrick McGlamery. He will tell you what to put in the
651 field and you will edit the record when you receive the
info from him.
If you have information about a place name, but you cannot
verify the name in GNIS, TIGER, CHS, and IPC, DO NOT
use the name! Contac
Patrick McGlamery.
If you are certain that the place name was spelled wrong on
the original image, use the correct name found in the sources
and make a note in the 500 field.

Provide
a 651 entry for the river name even if the river is not visible
in the image. This will enable a search for all the mills
along the Quinnebaug, for example.
