10.1  Enter topical subject headings from Library of Congress Subject Heading. If you use subject headings from TGM or AAT, in the cataloging module, change the second indicator from 0 to 7 and add |2 tgm or |2 aat accordingly.

10.3  New Subject Heading: when assign a new subject heading, you should use the sources in the following sequence (Minutes 10/11/2000):

  1. Browse the subject list through the Browse section of the CHO web site.
  2. Look the original Subject Headings developed by the Selection Committee and this group.
  3. Check the Red Book (LCSH).
  4. Check Thesaurus for Graphic Materials (TGM).
  5. Check The Art & Architecture Thesaurus (AAT).
  6. If not found in the above sources, post a question to the Cataloging Discussion Group.
10.4  Ships, boats, schooners: if a specific heading is assigned, for example, a schooner's name, a broader heading "Ships" should also be assigned. (Minutes 8/23/2000, 11/15/2000)

10.5  Gender: put the word "women" or "men" in the description and use specific headings in the subject. (Minutes 8/23/2000)

10.6  Children: assign "Children" as a subject and use "boys" or "girls" in the description. (Minutes 8/23/2000)

10.7  Races: be cautious when assigning a subject heading involving a race. Always use "identified as …" or "identified by …", or "appear(s) to be ..."  when appropriate. Put documentary evidence in a note if possible. (Minutes 8/23/2000)

10.8  Disaster names: you can assign local subject headings to disaster names if the specific disaster name is not found in LCSH. However, a broader LCSH heading should also be assigned. (Minutes 10/11/2000, 11/15/2000)

10.9  Architecture style and features: it is NOT appropriate to assign a period/style subject heading to buildings in most cases. The style should be noted in the description. The authority/source for that description should be included in the notes fields if they are available. (Minutes 10/23/2000)

10.10  Churches with specific denominations: if a church's denomination is known, use the specific denomination heading defined in LCSH and also use the general heading "Church buildings". (Minutes 11/15/200)

10.11  Subject headings for images depicting people: do NOT use the following subject headings for images depicting people:

Clothing and dress
Hairstyle
Hats
Footwear
Mustaches
… etc.

If an image was selected to show the period clothing and hairstyles, footwear, etc., the specific keywords should be included in the description. (Minutes 11/29/2000)

10.12  "Panoramic views" and other "…views", "Skylines", etc.: do NOT use any "… views" headings, or "Cities and towns", or "Skylines" for images depicting entire town or part of a town or place. If an image does not focus on buildings, streets, or any clearly visible objects but only have a broad view of entire town or part of a town, you should assign the name of the town, city or place in the 651 Place Name field and try to put above terms in the description. 10.13  Topical subject vs. genre: if an appropriate subject heading cannot be found in LCSH, do NOT use any genre terms from TGM II. Try to search AAT and use AAT headings if found. (Minutes 11/15/2000)

10.14  "Portrait photography" vs. "Portraits, Group": do NOT use "Portraits, Group", use "Portrait photography" instead. Use "Portrait photography" whenever the photograph seemed like a posed, formal one, especially taken by a professional. (Minutes 10/23/2000)

10.15  Employees: if a type of work can be identified in a picture depicting people, use specific terms for the type of work, for example, "Carpenters", "Electric engineers", etc. in addition to the subject heading "(Industry) - Employees". If a type of work cannot be identified, use only "(Industry) - Employees". (Minutes 2/27/01)
