| Description | Starboard view of the ketch yacht Oriole. |
| Description notes | Title supplied by cataloger. Photograph of watercolor in album of memorabilia related to the schooner yacht Dauntless. Label reads in part: ""A drawing made in 1966 based on a faded photograph of a sketch of Oriole. The sketch was part of a New Year's greeting card sent by one of Colt's guests aboard Oriole, Lieutenant Wm. Henn of the British Navy. Henn was the skipper of the British yacht Galatea which had unsuccessfully challenged the American yacht Mayflower for the America's cup [sic] in 1886. He must have been an especially close friend of Colt, for it was he who sent the telgrams to Colt's physician in Hartford, Dr. William D. Morgan, urgently summoning him to come to Forida to attend the sudddenly ill Colt. Morgan began instantly to pack, but within half an hour received a second telegram from Henn saying Colt had died...."" Oriole was purchased by yachtsman Caldwell Hart Colt circa 1892 for cruising in Florida waters. From 1882 until his death in 1894, Colt also owned the 1870 America's Cup contender Dauntless, a schooner yacht built by Forsyth and Morgan of Mystic, 1866. |
