rail-steamer
transportation
system
that
provided
passenger
and
freight
service
from
New
York
to
New
England
cities
.
City
of
New
London
and her
sister
vessel
,
City
of
Norwich
,
primarily
carried
freight
for the
Norwich
and
New
York
Transportation
Company
. She was
destroyed
in a
fire
that
occurred
November
23
,
1871
.
Seventeen
people
died
. She was on her
way
from
Norwich
and
fog-bound
off
Montville
.
It
was
believed
that a
cook
laid
a
red
hot
poker
on
woodwork
. The
fire
started
in the
galley
and
spread
to
cotton
bales
on
board
.
