Description	Men stand around a large flagpole on West Main Street. To the right is a wood structure with the words "URN" and "MAGIC/ OIL" painted on front (?) and side. The bridge can be seen on the left. A sign overhead reads "TROT NOT ON THIS BRIDGE". Beyond the bridge on East Main Street on the Stonington side, Washington Hall can be seen. Partially visible beyond it is Hoxie House. Also partially visible between the flagpole and one of its supports is a white building with a fanlight on its pediment. Below is a sign reading "DRY GOODS AND GROCER__"
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. Washington Hall, also known as the Exchange Block, was built in 1850 and burned in 1885. Mystic Opera House, also known as the Tripp Block, was built and opened on the same site in 1887. The photograph predates the 1876 relocation of the Mystic flagpole from the Groton side of the river to the corner of Cottrell and East Main Streets, next to Washington Hall. The iron drawbridge was built in 1866 and replaced in 1904. Attributed to Everett A. Scholfield, a professional photographer who worked primarily in Mystic and New London from 1865-1913.
