noted
for her
speed
. She was
one
of a
fleet
of
steamers
owned
by
subsidiary
companies
of the
New
York
,
New
Haven
&
Hartford
Railroad
coordinating
rail-steamboat
travel
from
New
York
to
New
England
cities
.
Manhanset
was a
screw
steamer
built
in
Mystic
,
1879
, by
Mason
Crary
Hill
for the
New
London
&
Long
Island
Steamboat
Co
. She was
chartered
out
of
New
London
for
excursions
to
various
islands
off
the
coast
,
including
Fisher's
Island
and
Block
Island
, and to
Long
Island
ports
.
Another
excursion
steamer
,
Manhasset
(built
in
New
York
1860)
may
have
frequently
the
New
London
area
as
well
.
Date
is
identified
as
circa
1885
, but this
must
be an
error
if the
City
of
Lowell
is
correctly
identified
.
