Description	Starboard view of the oyster steamer J. Howard Lowndes at wharf in the ice. Men can be seen on deck. Astern is the open deck oyster steamer Sealshipt No. 38. Buildings can be seen along the wharf in the background.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. J. Howard Lowndes was built in South Norwalk, 1886. Her dimensions were 75 x 18.9 x 6.5 feet. Location of the photograph is unknown. Oystering was an important Connecticut industry in the 19th and 20th centuries. New Haven and South Norwalk were among the centers of local and regional cultivation and harvesting. The peak period was 1885-1910.
