Description	View of a vessel identified as the passenger ferry Gov. Winthrop, Thames River at New London. A shoreline, possibly the Groton side of the river, can be seen in the background.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. The Governor Winthrop was built by Robert Palmer & Son of Noank in 1905 and went into service on the Thames in that year. The Palmer family's shipbuilding and repair facility, in operation from the mid-19th century until 1914, was one of the most prominent on the east coast. It was incorporated under several names and experienced substantial growth in the second half of the 19th century, specializing in the production of utilitarian barges and floats. In the early twentieth century, the yard employed 400 men on average. Taken by Everett A. Scholfield, a professional photographer who worked primarily in Mystic and New London from 1865-1913.
