Description	Vessels are moored alongside a wharf, probably in New York City. The barge Rhode Island is at left. Lettering on her stern reads: "RHODE ISLAND OF NEW YORK", and on the starboard side superstructure "SAVANNAH LINE". Several other barges including the Annie C. McNeeley to the right, and behind them, the steamship SS Robert Dollar.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. Photograph has some connection to Merritt & Chapman Derrick & Wrecking Company. Rhode Island was built in Noank by Robert Palmer & Sons in 1882. She was barged in 1903, rebuilt as the six-masted schooner Doverfield in 1916, and lost in 1919. The Palmer family's shipbuilding and repair facility, in operation from the mid-19th century until 1914, was one of the most prominent on the east coast. It was incorporated under several names, including R. & J. Palmer, Robert Palmer & Sons, and Robert Palmer & Son Shipbuilding and Marine Railway, and experienced substantial growth in the second half of the 19th century, specializing in the production of utilitarian barges and floats. Merritt & Chapman Derrick & Wrecking Company merged with T.A. Scott Company of New London in 1922 to form Merritt-Chapman & Scott Corporation, a marine engineering, construction and salvage firm.
