Description	Hand- and machine-stitched right-hand mitten is made of brown leather. The body of the mitten is made of two pieces sewn together at the sides, and the thumb piece is sewn together and to the mitten with a leather strip. The bottom edge of the mitten is bound in brown cotton tape, stitched on by machine.<br>
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger.<br>The mitten was probably made by Alexander Gordon in Woodbury, Connecticut. It was worn, and probably mended, by the homeless tramp known as the Leatherman, who wandered a circuit between the Connecticut River and the Hudson River from 1858 to 1889. The Leatherman has been identified as Jules Bourglay, originally of Lyons, France.<br>Gift of George S. Godard.<br>
