Description	Starboard view of the steamship Battahatchee on the building ways at Gildersleeve Shipbuilding Co., Gildersleeve.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. Established as S. Gildersleeve and Sons, ca. 1821, the company became Gildersleeve Shipbuilding Company in 1908. Its name was changed to Gildersleeve Ship Construction Company, ca. 1917. The company remained active until 1932, by then also building icehouses and other structures. The Emergency Fleet Corporation was formed ten days after the United States entered World War I in 1917. It was commissioned to build, equip, maintain and operate merchant vessels to meet the shipping demands of the war. Battahatchee was built for the U. S. Shipping Board, Emergency Fleet Corporation and launched October 5, 1918. She is identified as a transport ship in a related record. Mounted on gray card. Card dimensions: 10 x 11 5/8 in.
