probably
in the
process
of
being
refitted
. The
sheerlegs
can
be
seen
behind
the
vessel
to the
left
.

is
visible
in the
left
background
.

company
manufactured
and
fitted
engines
and
boilers
for
vessels
. Its
boom
period
was
during
and
immediately
after
the
Civil
War
when
it
fitted
and
refitted
a
number
of
vessels
. The
company
also
built
one
vessel
, the
iron-hulled
screw
towboat
Montaines
.
Business
fell
dramatically
after
the
war
. The
building
also
housed
the
looms
of the
Oceanic
Woolen
Mill
from the
late
1860's
to the
early
1870's
;
it
burned
in
1873
.
Pine
Hill
was on the
north
end
of
Masons
Island
, and was
reduced
by
quarrying
to
make
breakwaters
at
Block
Island
and
Stonington
in the
1870's
and
1880's
.
