was
built
in
Chester
,
Pennsylvania
,
1898
. Her
former
name
was
Allan
Joy
. She was
rebuilt
at
Newport
News
,
Virginia
in
1899
and
rebuilt
at
New
Haven
, in
1900
. As a
Bridgeport
Line/New
England
Steamship
Company
vessel
, and
renamed
in
1905
,
Naugatuck
ran
between
Bridgeport
and
New
York
until
1920
. She was
sold
to
Sound
Steamship
Lines
in
1935
, and was an
excursion
steamer
as
well
as
making
runs
between
Providence
and
Block
Island
. The
steamer
Block
Island
was
built
by
Robert
Palmer
&
Sons
for the
New
London
Steamboat
Co
. in
1882
. She
ran
between
Norwich
and
Block
Island
, with
stops
in
New
London
and
Watch
Hill
, as
well
as
Noank
,
Mystic
(Ram)
Island
and
Stonington
.
Later
under
the
ownership
of
subsidiary
companies
of the
New
York
,
New
Haven
and
Hartford
Railroad
, she
continued
on this
route
.
According
to
some
sources
, from
1915
to
1930
she was a
boarding
house
and
mess
hall
in
Newport
,
Rhode
Island
, and in
1930
was
towed
to
Dyers
Island
and
burned
. The
New
England
Steamship
Company
was a
subsidiary
of the
New
York
,
New
Haven
and
Hartford
Railroad
, and
one
of a
fleet
of
vessels
supporting
coordinated
water-rail
transportation
between
New
York
and
New
England
ports
.
Other

Block
Island
indicate
that the
location
is
probably
Newport
,
prior
to the
Block
Island's
destruction
in
1930
.
