Description	Wharf scene at New Bedford, Massachusetts, August 19, 1896. Port broadside view of whaling bark George and Mary, shortly before being burned. Effigies of men can be seen in her rigging. At left background is bow view of sidewheel steamer City of Lawrence. At right background is David Duff and Sons Coal building. At right foreground is port bow view of sloop Estella.

Information from original envelope: "Barque/ George + Mary/ at Pier 3/ with Effigies in/ rigging/ by Paul Tighlman" The vessels are shown in New Bedford Harbor probably during a Veteran Firemen's Convention, August 19 1896, for which effigies were hung from the George and Mary's rigging and the vessel burned. George and Mary (built 1852) was a whaling bark built in Dartmouth, Massachusetts (1852) and registered in New London (1866). Estella, launched April 1876 by D.O. Richmond of Mystic for Henry K. Manwaring, was originally a yacht, later an oyster sloop. D.O. Richmond was considered one of Mystic's finest boatbuilders, and had a close working relationship with Charles Henry Mallory. His first yard was on Holmes Street on the east side of the river; his second (late 1860's-1908) on the west, below the bridge. City of Lawrence (built 1867, Wilmington, Delaware) was one of the steamers that plied Long Island Sound, linking New York and New England cities through coordinated water and rail transport. She was part of the Norwich & New York Transportation Company fleet.
