Norwich
was
built
in
Greenpoint
or
Brooklyn
,
New
York
in
1862
. She was
part
of the
coordinated
rail-steamer
transportation
system
that
provided
passenger
and
freight
service
from
New
York
to
New
England
cities
.
City
of
Norwich
and her
sister
vessel
,
City
of
New
London
,
primarily
carried
freight
for the
Norwich
and
New
York
Transportation
Company
.
City
of
Norwich
was an
army
transport
during
the
Civil
War
. In
1866
she was
sunk
in a
collision
(thirteen
people
and
one
horse
were
killed)
, then was
salvaged
and
put
in
service
. She
burned
to the
waterline
two
years
later
(eleven
people
killed)
and was
rebuilt
again
,
mainly
for
use
as a
relief
boat
.
Sources
differ
as to how
long
and in what
form
she
remained
in
service
for the
company
.
Possible
dates
are
1879
or
1883
.
Reportedly
, at
some
point
she
sank
a
third
time
on
Cornfield
Shoal
off
Saybrook
and was
salvaged
again
, was also
used
as a
barge
in
New
Jersey
in
1895-1896
, and was
finally
broken
up
at
Stonington
in
1913
.
Norwich
is
at the
head
of the
Thames
River
,
which
is
formed
by the
confluence
of the
Shetucket
and
Yantic
Rivers
.
