Description	Tinted portrait of Captain Silas Beebe. He is seated facing slightly to his right. He wears a dark suit, vest and white cravat. He holds spectacles in his right hand, an umbrella in his left.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. Dimensions given are for outside measurement of frame. Captain Beebe was involved in fishing and coastal freighting out of Mystic during the first third of the nineteenth century. He is known to have commanded the schooner Ranger in the 1830's, and also commanded the brig Tampico. He was first master and part owner of the Mystic-built (1818) schooner Eliza and master and part owner of the schooner La Grange, built at the Burrows yard in Old Mystic in 1826. Photograph is possibly touched with gouache. Hand coloring was done by Miss L. P. Smith who advertised as a photographic colorist in the Mystic Pioneer. Oval frame of dark wood, with gilt inside frame. White mat with gold line in center and narrow gold towards portrait. Attributed to Everett A. Scholfield, a professional photographer who worked primarily in Mystic and New London from 1865-1913.
