Minnesota
and
Dakota
were
sister
ships
built
in
1904
and
1905
by
Eastern
Shipbuilding
company
of
Groton
, and
owned
by
Great
Northern
Steamship
Co
. They
ran
between
Seattle
and
ports
in
Japan
and
China
.
Dakota
was
lost
off
Shirahama
,
Japan
,
March
3
,
1907
.
Either
vessel
is
identified
as
one
of
first
boats
built
at
Nelseco
, but
secondary
source
information
and
chronology
of
vessels
indicate
that
Eastern
Shipbuiding
,
predecessor
builder
on the
same
site
, and not
Nelseco
, was the
builder
.
Eastern
Shipbuilding
was in
business
from
1900
until
shortly
after
the
launch
of the
Dakota
.
It
had been
taken
over
by the
United
States
Shipping
Corporation
in
1902
.
New
London
Ship
and
Engine
Company
(Nelseco)
took
over
the
site
in
1910
.
Shortly
thereafter
Nelseco
officially
became
a
subsidiary
of
submarine
maker
Electric
Boat
Company
. The
company
manufactured
diesel
engines
for
submarines
on the
former
Eastern
Shipbuilding
site
and
later
,
submarines
for the
Navy
.
