Description	Full-length studio portrait of a man identified as Captain Samuel Francis Davis. He has a beard and wears dark-colored suit with vest. His left hand is resting on the back of a chair partially visible to the right.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. Handwritten in pencil on back "Father/ Samuel F. Davis". Samuel Francis Davis (1833-1893) sailed as boatsteerer and mate on the Charles W. Morgan, and master of whaling bark George & Susan and ship Desdemona. The Desdemona was built as a ship at Middletown in 1823 and was classified as a whaling bark by 1865. She was wrecked at Rowes Welcome, Hudson's Bay in 1896. The Charles W. Morgan was a New Bedford whaleship built in 1841. She was rigged as a bark during much of her long and successful working life, which ended in 1921. She was moved to Mystic Seaport in 1941, where she is now a floating exhibit. Printed on front: "HOWLAND & CROWELL,/ No. 30 Purchase Street, New Bedford, Mass." Albumen print on white card with double gold line border. Photo dimensions: 3 1/2 x 2 1/8 in.
