Description	View of the suction dredger Quinnipiac of New Haven engaged in oystering.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. Rubber stamped on back "ROBERT K. BRIGHAM/ U.S. FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE/ BUREAU OF COMMERCIAL FISHERIES/ WOODS HOLE, MASS." Quinnipiac was built in Kingston, New York, 1943 as an army vessel. She was converted to a hydraulic dredger by F. Mansfield & Sons Co. of New Haven and later operated by the Long Island Oyster Farms out of New Haven. She is described as "used mainly for cleaning ground and catching oyster shells, gathering as many as 200,000 bushels of shell a season." (Oystering from New York to Boston, by John M. Kochiss, page 153). Oystering was an important Connecticut industry in the 19th and 20th centuries. New Haven and South Norwalk were among the centers of local and regional cultivation and harvesting. The peak period was 1885-1910.
