wide
porch
,
cupola
and
mansard
roof
with
dormers
, as
well
as a
wing
visible
on the
left
.
Many
of the
windows
have
shutters
, and the
front
of the
house
is
bordered
by a
wrought-iron
fence
.

filling

now
occupies
the
site
".
Notes
Title
supplied
by
cataloger
. The
house
was
built
with
profits
from
whaling
and was
later
enlarged
and
remodeled
with
money
made
in
shipping
and
shipbuilding
by the
family
firm
.
It
was
used
mostly
as a
summer
house
for the
New
York-based
Mallory
after
1870
. The
additions
can
be
seen
in this
photograph
,
probably
taken
sometime
after
1885
.
It
was
later
a
boarding
house
,
referred
to as
Lamphere
House
, and was
torn
down
in the
early
twentieth
century
to be
replaced
by an
auto
service
station
. A
Bess
Eaton
doughnut
shop
now
occupies
the
site
.
Charles

was the
son
of
Charles
Mallory
,
founder
of the
family's
sail
making
and
maritime
enterprises
.
