Description	A man identified as Captain George Comer stands in the rigging of a ship identified as the A.T. Gifford. Barrels are partially visible in the dock area in the foreground.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. On rear, typewritten: "Captain Comer, standing in the/ rigging of his ship, tied up/ at the Steamboat Wharf, in/ New London, Connecticut./ Charles H. Morris." Also in pencil: "A.T. GIFFORD/ (Stamford owners)/ about 1907". Captain George Comer (1858-1937) was a sealer and whaling captain from East Haddam. He went to sea while still in his teens and was later master of vessels from both New London and New Bedford, and participated in voyages involved in polar expeditions. Comer was noted for his studies of Arctic peoples and their environment. The schooner A.T. Gifford was built in 1883 at Essex, Massachusetts. While in command of her, Comer mapped areas in the Hudson Bay area.
