cabin
is
called
a
companion/
way
. There
is
one
at
each
end
. The
one
on/
the
front
end
is
usually
on the
starboard
side,/
while
the
one
aft
is
on the
port
side
.
Capt./
Comer
had these
reversed
for
some
reason.
"
Blossom
was also
known
as
Lucy
R
. and
Three
Brothers
. She was a
commercial
packet
schooner
formerly
the
Lucy
R
. of
Nova
Scotia
. She was
purchased
by the
Cleveland
Museum
of
Natural
History
with
funds
from a
Mrs
.
Blossom
and
made
a
voyage
to the
Indian
Ocean
to
gather
ornithological
specimens
.
Blossom
was
fitted
out
in
New
London
and
sailed
out
of that
port
circa
1923
. In
schoolbook
writing
pad
converted
to
photo
album
described
as "The
beginning
of the
good
ship/
BLOSSOM

about

"
Album
apparently
documents
period
of the
conversion
of the
Lucy
R
. to the
Blossom
with
photographs
taken
in
New
London
,
based
on
identification
of
related
images
. The
Captain
Comer
mentioned
is
Captain
George
Comer
, a
sealer
and
whaling
captain
from
East
Haddam
.
Comer
participated
in
voyages
involved
in
polar
expeditions
and was
noted
for his
studies
of
Arctic
peoples
and their
environment
. His
scientific
interests
led
him to
involvement
in the
Blossom
project
in its
earlier
stages
.
