Description	Studio portrait of a man identified as Captain James F. Smith. He has a white mustache and wears a Knights Templar uniform.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. Printed on back: "GILES BISHOP,/ Photographer,/ No. 22 STATE STREET,/ NEW LONDON, CONN./ NEGATIVES PRESERVED."; and handwritten: "Capt. James Francis Smith in Knight Templar's uniform." Another image (1977.160.2141), apparently of the same man, identifies him as James Francis Smith of New London, captain of the steamers Old Glory and Manhanset, as well as other vessels. The screw steamer Manhanset was a New-London based excursion boat built by Mason Crary Hill of Mystic in 1879. The Knights Templar are a Christian-oriented fraternal organization associated with the Masons. Albumen print mounted on white card, rounded corners, gold beveled edges, 6 1/2 x 4 1/4 in.
