Description	View of East Main Street, Mystic, near the intersection with Holmes Street. A flagpole is visible in the intersection to the right. A horse and carriage can be seen on the north side of East Main Street in front of the Newbury Block, visible behind the flagpole. On the south side of the street, Hoxie House can be seen at far left. Just beyond, on the other side of Cottrell Street, is the Opera House. A sign projecting from a post in front of Hoxie House reads: "POSTAL TELEGRAPH CABLE CO." Signs on storefronts of the Hoxie House read, from left to right: "P. J. BUTTEN/TAILOR" and "POSTAL/Telegraph/ OFFICE" "MYSTIC VARIETY STORE". Sign advertising dry goods, groceries and tinware can be seen to the right of the Mystic Variety Store doorway. Sign on the Cottrell Street side of the Opera House advertises "Mitchell/&/Son/Practical/Watch Makers/AND/Opticians". The Mystic River Bridge is visible in the center distance, with its "WALK YOUR HORSES" sign. Pedestrians can be seen in the walkway on the north side of the bridge. Buildings on West Main Street are visible on the other side of the bridge. Snow can be seen on the bridge and on East Main Street.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. The Opera House was also known as the Tripp Block, and was destroyed by fire in 1900. The flagpole was erected in 1862 and originally located on West Main Street on the Groton side of Mystic. It was moved to East Main Street in 1876. Taken by Everett A. Scholfield, a professional photographer who worked primarily in Mystic and New London from 1865-1913.
