Description	View of a hole in the side of the steamer Narragansett under repair at the Robert Palmer & Sons shipyard, Noank, after collision with her sister ship Stonington. A man stands on the deck above the hole.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. The steamer Narragansett was one of a fleet providing rail-steamboat service connecting New York and Providence and points beyond. The collision date with the Stonington is variously given as June 8 and June 11, 1880. The Narragansett was the first large vessel hauled up on the new marine railway installed at the Palmer shipyard. The Palmer family's shipbuilding and repair facility, in operation from the mid-19th century until 1914, was one of the most prominent on the east coast. It was incorporated under several names, including R. & J. Palmer, Robert Palmer & Sons, and Robert Palmer & Son Shipbuilding and Marine Railway, and experienced substantial growth in the second half of the 19th century, specializing in the production of utilitarian barges and floats.
