was
built
1866
at the
Palmer
Yard
,
Noank
. She was a
sloop-rigged
well-smack
in her
early
years
,
registered
first
in
Stonington
and
later
,
New
London
. She was
re-rigged
as a
schooner
in the
1880's
. From
1894-1931
she had a
varied
career
in
Maine
, was
rebuilt
in the
1930's
by
F
.
Slade
Dale
, her
home
port
then
being
Bay
Head
,
New
Jersey
.
Dale
donated
her to
Mystic
Seaport
in
1969
where
she was
rebuilt
and
restored
; she
remains
a
floating
exhibit
. A
well
smack
was a
fishing
vessel
with an
open
well
for
keeping
live
catch
. The
Palmer
family's
shipbuilding
and
repair
facility
, in
operation
from the
mid-19th
century
unitll
1914
, was
one
of the
most
prominent
on the
east
coast
.
It
was
incorporated
under
several
names
,
including
R
.
&
J
.
Palmer
and
Robert
Palmer
&
Son
Shipbuilding
and
Marine
Railway
, and
experienced
substantial
growth
in the
second
half
of the
19th
century
,
specializing
in the
production
of
utilitarian
barges
and
floats
.
