Greenman

who
earlier
in the
nineteenth
century
formed
the
George
Greenman
&
Co
.
shipbuilding
business
with his
two
younger
brothers
,
Clark
and
Thomas
. In
addition
to that
enterprise
, the
Greenmans
owned
in
whole
or
part
the
Greenmanville
Manufacturing
Company
(later
the
Mystic
Manufacturing
Company)
producing
woolen
and
other
textiles
, and the
Standard
Machine
Company
. The
area
along
the
Mystic
River
on the
Stonington
side
north
of
downtown
Mystic
was
known
as
Greenmanville
.
Three
of the
Greenman
brothers
,
including
George
(father
of
George
H.)
,
lived
and had their
shipyard
and
mill
in this
area
in the
nineteenth
century
. Their
houses
are on the
west
side
of
Greenmanville
Avenue
, and are
now
part
of
Mystic
Seaport
.
