Description	View of a large house with a pitched roof and small porch. Nine people, including several children, are in front of the house. Two of the children sit on fence posts, one just to the right of the walkway leading to the porch steps, and one farther to the right. The windows have louvered shutters, some closed. A house is partially visible to the left. An outbuilding and what appears to be the back of another house can be seen to the right.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. Handwritten on back: "Capt Benj. F. Holmes home in Stonington (Mystic River) [sic?] where Anne M. Holmes (Brockington) was launched - after Capt Bens Death his brother Capt Jos Warren Holmes sold this property and cleaned up the Estate except the Cemetary Plots which I deeded to Ann just before her death - One good deed for which I am thankful. EWH (E. Warren Holmes]". Possibly the Captain Benjamin F. Holmes who was master and part owner of the Civl War era screw steamer Idaho, built by George Greenman & Co. Joseph Warren Holmes was born in Mystic. In his more than fifty-year career of commanding clipper ships and others, he did not lose a single vessel or man. He sailed around Cape Horn 84 times and the Cape of Good Hope fourteen times, possibly a record. Mystic River was the name for the area of Mystic village on the Groton (not Stonington) side of the Mystic River. The village area on the Stonington side was known as Mystic Bridge. Approximate date based on clothing style. Top of photograph rounded. Mounted on gray card, rounded corners, 5 x 8 in.
