Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. One of a collection of photographs taken by the New Haven Redevelopment Agency to document a massive urban planning and development project undertaken from 1956 through the mid-1970s. The federally-financed redevelopment initiative was realized through a series of projects focused on particular New Haven city neighborhoods identified by street or area names. These projects involved the demolition of old structures and construction of new buildings, roadways and other facilities. Oak Street extended from Congress Avenue to Howe Street, two blocks south of George Street. The Oak Street neighborhood was an early and major target of redevelopment. It was an ethnically diverse area of shops, restaurants, residences and family businesses. The perception of it as a gritty neighborhood with decayed housing stock caused planners to seek to substantially reconfigure and transform the area. Oak Street and other roadways and buildings entirely disappeared, replaced by the new Oak Street Connector and modern commercial and residential structures. Based on the location of the Madison, University and Crown Towers buildings, this may be near North Frontage Road between York and Park Streets.
