Description	View of Church Street prior to redevelopment, looking south toward Crown Street from the intersection of Church and Chapel Streets, New Haven. Some signs are visible above the storefronts of commercial buildings. On the west side of Church, businesses include (from right foreground to center background): Arnold's Boot Shops, Lip's Restaurant and Bar, Waldorf Cafeteria, Savitt, Nat Greenblatt Clothes and Merit, among other businesses. The First New Haven National Bank can be seen in the background. On the east side of Church Street, businesses include Lerner Shops, [J] Johnson & Sons shoes, and Pearlin. Pedestrians can be seen on the sidewalk. Cars are visible in the roadway and parked along both sides of the street.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. One of a collection of photographs taken by the New Haven Redevelopment Agency to document a massive urban planning and development project undertaken from 1956 through the mid-1970s. The federally-financed redevelopment initiative was realized through a series of projects focused on particular New Haven city neighborhoods identified by street or area names. These projects involved the demolition of old structures and construction of new buildings, roadways and other facilities. Much of the area involved in the Church Street project had been characterized by a mix of small stores, restaurants, theaters and residences. In the course of redevelopment, whole blocks were demolished to make way for larger modern structures such as department stores, hotels, office buildings, a mall and the New Haven Coliseum.
