Description	View of a commercial building on George Street prior to redevelopment, Church Street Project area, New Haven. The number "149" can be seen on the building. A neon sign for Albert's Furniture Co. extends from the building. Signs above the storefront read, from left to right: "NEW HAVEN BRANCH OF/Connecticut's Largest/FURNITURE STORE", "OPEN AN ACCOUNT", "COMPLETE HOME FURNISHERS/Albert's/FURNITURE CO.", "Thousands/of/[S]ATISFIED/[C]USTOMERS", and "FREE Courtesy Auto/SERVICE DAILY/___ STORE IN/WATERBURY". Another sign to the right of the storefront display windows reads "ALMOST/42/YEARS".
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. Taken by Mrs. Marion R. Haskell, March 1959. One of a collection of photographs taken by the New Haven Redevelopment Agency to document a massive urban planning and development project undertaken from 1956 through the mid-1970s. The federally-financed redevelopment initiative was realized through a series of projects focused on particular New Haven city neighborhoods identified by street or area names. These projects involved the demolition of old structures and construction of new buildings, roadways and other facilities. Much of the area involved in the Church Street project had been characterized by a mix of small stores, restaurants, theaters and residences. In the course of redevelopment, whole blocks were demolished to make way for larger modern structures such as department stores, hotels, office buildings, a mall and the New Haven Coliseum. If the building address is 149 George, it appears that it would have been located in the block between Church and Temple.
