One
of a
collection
of
photographs
taken
by the
New
Haven
Redevelopment
Agency
to
document
a
massive
urban
planning
and
development
project
undertaken
from
1956
through
the
mid-1970s
. The
federally-financed
redevelopment
initiative
was
realized
through
a
series
of
projects
focused
on
particular
New
Haven
city
neighborhoods
identified
by
street
or
area
names
. These
projects
involved
the
demolition
of
old
structures
and
construction
of
new
buildings
,
roadways
and
other
facilities
. The
Long
Wharf
project
area
comprised
the
waterfront
along
the
mouth
of the
Mill
and
Quinnipiac
Rivers
and
New
Haven
harbor
.
Marshy
areas
were
filled
in to
accommodate
the
Connecticut
Turnpike
(Interstate
95)
and
new
industrial
and
commercial
sites
.
Several
long-time
industries
housed
in
older
buildings
near
the
waterfront
or
elsewhere
in the
city
were
relocated
to
new
facilities
in the
Long
Wharf
area
. The
Armstrong
Rubber
Company
headquarters
was
moved
from
West
Haven
to the
redeveloped
Long
Wharf
area
. The
building
was
designed
by
noted
architect
Marcel
Breuer
.
