Grinnell
was from the
local
19th-century
shipbuilding
family
and
grew
up
in
Mystic
. He was a
musician
who
at
one
time
had his
own
orchestra
, and
taught
violin
at
Connecticut
College
. He was also a
well-known
local
artist
and
active
member
of the
Mystic
Art
Association
.
Isabel
Grinnell
was the
daughter
of
G
.
Victor
Grinnell
and
Eva
Collins
Grinnell
. In
adult
life
she was
known
as an
accomplished
artist
and
violinist
. She
married
Charles
Dewar
Simons
and
divided
her
time
beween
the
Grinnell
family
house
in
Mystic
, and
Staten
Island
New
York
. The
Grinnell
family
home
was
built
in
1885
. The
contents
were
sold
and the
house
demolished
after
Isabel
Grinnell
Simons'
death
in
1965
. The
Mary
Elizabeth
Nursing
Center
occupies
the
site
of the
house
at
present
.
