Description	View of the west side of State Street between Whiting Street and the Oak Street Connector, Lower Project area, Church Street Project, New Haven, prior to redevelopment. A street sign on the northwest corner identifies the intersection of State and Whiting. Two men sit in the doorway of a business that occupies the ground floor of a three-story brick building on the southwest corner. A sign over the door advertises "CASABLANCA/BAR/GRILLE". A "D and V BEEF CO." sign can be seen over the left side of the first floor of an adjacent four-story brick and stone building farther south on State.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. Dated June 1964. One of a collection of photographs taken by the New Haven Redevelopment Agency to document a massive urban planning and development project undertaken from 1956 through the mid-1970s. The federally-financed redevelopment initiative was realized through a series of projects focused on particular New Haven city neighborhoods identified by street or area names. These projects involved the demolition of old structures and construction of new buildings, roadways and other facilities. Much of the Church Street project area had been characterized by a mix of small stores, restaurants, theaters and residences. In the course of redevelopment, whole blocks were demolished to make way for larger modern structures such as department stores, hotels, office buildings, a mall and the New Haven Coliseum. A 1950 city directory map shows Whiting Street extending from State Street to Hill Street, south of Congress Avenue and George Street. Whiting Street no longer exists.
