Greenman
or
Frank
Champlin
.
It
is
composed
of
seventeen
"
lifts
" of
alternating
pine
and
mahogany
.
Shipbuilders
used
such
models
to
construct
molds
to
shape
the
frames
of
vessels
.
Frolic
was
built
for
John
A.
McGaw
of
New
York
by
George
Greenman
&
Company
and
launched
on
July
5
,
1869
, the
last
square-rigged
vessel
built
by the
Greenman
firm
. She was
advertised
as a "
Mystic
built
extreme
clipper
"
designed
for the
California
trade
. In
1880
she was
sold
to
German
owners
for
$31,200
and
renamed
Elise
. She was
broken
up
at
Genoa
,
Italy
in
1907
.

for the
half
model
. The
photograph
dates
sometime
after
acquisition
of the
model
in
1938
.
