Description	View of commercial buildings, including a storage warehouse, River and Ferry Streets, Fair Haven Project area, New Haven. A two-story brick building can be seen at the street corner. A sign above the second floor windows closest to the intersection reads: "NEW/HAVEN' and "STORAGE WAREHOUSE/AROUND THE CORNER", with an arrow pointing to hte right. Signs in the first-floor corner windows advertise Gillette Tires. A larger building or complex of buildings can be seen to the right and in the background behind the corner building. A Volkswagen Beetle car is approaching the intersection from the left.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. One of a collection of photographs taken by the New Haven Redevelopment Agency to document a massive urban planning and development project undertaken from 1956 through the mid-1970s. The federally-financed redevelopment initiative was realized through a series of projects focused on particular New Haven city neighborhoods identified by street or area names. These projects involved the demolition of old structures and construction of new buildings, roadways and other facilities. The Fair Haven redevelopment area was comprised of a residential, commercial and industrial area between the Mill and Quinnipiac Rivers at the east end of Haven. Fair Haven was not always a part of New Haven, and merged most recently in 1870. It was a center for oystering throughout the nineteenth century and into the twentieth. Shipbuilding and other industries also supported the economy. Redevelopment efforts in the Fair Haven project area focused on run-down housing, commercial and industrial areas.
