Description	View of a two-story brick building identified as Dixwell Community House before redevelopment, Dixwell Project area, New Haven. "DIXWELL/COMMUNITY HOUSE" can be seen above a doorway. At the lower right-hand corner of the facade the date "A.D./1924" is visible. A phone booth, a sign reading "NO/PARKING/CHURCH/BUSINESS", and a parked car can be seen in front of the building. Part of the Dixwell Avenue Congregational Church structure is visible at far right.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger One of a collection of photographs taken by the New Haven Redevelopment Agency to document a massive urban planning and development project undertaken from 1956 through the mid-1970s. The federally-financed redevelopment initiative was realized through a series of projects focused on particular New Haven city neighborhoods identified by street or area names. These projects involved the demolition of old structures and construction of new buildings, roadways and other facilities. Much of the area involved in the Dixwell Project had been characterized by a mix of residences, small stores and businesses. As part of redevelopment, older buildings were demolished to make way for modern structures and centralized shopping plazas. Redevelopment extended beyond Dixwell Avenue proper to surrounding and adjacent areas. The Dixwell Community House, also known as Q House, was founded in 1924-1925. It was an outgrowth of social service and other work done by the Community Baptist Church for the African American community in the Dixwell Avenue neighborhood.
