One
of a
collection
of
photographs
taken
by the
New
Haven
Redevelopment
Agency
to
document
a
massive
urban
planning
and
development
project
undertaken
from
1956
through
the
mid-1970s
. The
federally-financed
redevelopment
initiative
was
realized
through
a
series
of
projects
focused
on
particular
New
Haven
city
neighborhoods
identified
by
street
or
area
names
. These
projects
involved
the
demolition
of
old
structures
and
construction
of
new
buildings
,
roadways
and
other
facilities
.
Possibly
depicts
the
old
market
area
at the
corner
of
Hill
and
Silver
Streets
,
which
was
part
of the
Church
Street
South
project
area
. A
1950
city
directory
map
shows
Hill
Street
extending
from
Silver
Street
to
Congress
Avenue
,
east
of
Lafayette
.
Both
Hill
and
Silver
no
longer
exist
. As
part
of
redevelopment
many
food-related
businesses
were
relocated
from their
old
addresses
to the
new
Food
Terminal
in the
Long
Wharf
redevelopment
project
area
. This
project
area
comprised
the
waterfront
along
the
mouth
of the
Mill
and
Quinnipiac
Rivers
and
New
Haven
harbor
.
Marshy
areas
were
filled
in to
accommodate
the
Connecticut
Turnpike
(Interstate
95)
and
new
industrial
and
commercial
sites
. The
location
of the
Food
Terminal
provided
for
easy
access
to the
highways
and
eased
traffic
flow
in
downtown
areas
.
