Description	View of the D and V Beef Company, on the west side of State Street, Church Street project area, New Haven, prior to redevelopment. View is identified as the area of State between Connector and Whiting Street. D and V Beef occupies part of the ground floor of what appears to be a four-story brick and stone building. A truck is pulled up on the sidewalk near the doorway. Farther down the street a sign over a storefront advertises "CASABLANCA/BAR/GRILLE". A man sits on the stoop near what appears to be the entrance. In the right background, a sign for the New Haven Tobacco Co. is partially visible on the side of a building. Parked cars and pedestrians are in view.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. Dated June 1964. One of a collection of photographs taken by the New Haven Redevelopment Agency to document a massive urban planning and development project undertaken from 1956 through the mid-1970s. The federally-financed redevelopment initiative was realized through a series of projects focused on particular New Haven city neighborhoods identified by street or area names. These projects involved the demolition of old structures and construction of new buildings, roadways and other facilities. Much of the Church Street project area had been characterized by a mix of small stores, restaurants, theaters and residences. In the course of redevelopment, whole blocks were demolished to make way for larger modern structures such as department stores, hotels, office buildings, a mall and the New Haven Coliseum. A 1950 city directory map shows Whiting Street extending from State Street to Hill Street, south of Congress Avenue and George Street. Whiting Street no longer exists.
