Description	View of a five-story brick building on the northeast corner of Chestnut and Chapel Streets, Wooster Square project area, New Haven. The location is identified as before the Conte School. "B. SHONINGER CO." is carved above the third floor on the front of the building, which apparently faces Chapel Street. "OFFICE" is carved on the arch of the entryway. The number "511" is visible on a sign to the right of the building entrance. Signs on either side indicate that a variety of tenants occupy the building, including a beauty salon, sandwich shop, barber shop, print shop and upholstery shop. Down Chestnut Street to the left, a sign reading "115/ARBER MF'G CO./INC." can be seen on a three-story section that appears to adjoin the Shoninger building.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. One of a collection of photographs taken by the New Haven Redevelopment Agency to document a massive urban planning and development project undertaken from 1956 through the mid-1970s. The federally-financed redevelopment initiative was realized through a series of projects focused on particular New Haven city neighborhoods identified by street or area names. These projects involved the demolition of old structures and construction of new buildings, roadways and other facilities. The Wooster Square project targeted an old New Haven neighborhood with many lovely nineteenth-century houses as well as multi-family dwellings and industrial buildings. The construction of Interstates 95 and 91 and redevelopment initiatives swallowed up a number of buildings. Many others were refurbished as part of an effort to preserve the architectural heritage and character of the neighborhood. Another image of this corner identify it as related to the Conte School site. Aerial views of the Wooster Square redevelopment area show a Conte School located north of Chapel Street east of Wooster Place. A Conte/West Hills K-8 Magnet School is currently located at 511 Chapel Street. The Shoninger Company made pianos and organs in New Haven from the 1860s to the 1920s.
