Description	View looking north from what appears to be the Commerce Street area toward Church Street, Church Street redevelopment project, New Haven. The Congress Square building can be seen on the north side of Congress Street to the left. Businesses occuping the first floor include a luncheonette/fountain, Jack's Army & Navy Store and Dorer's Furniture. Across George Street, Allen's Cut Rate Store is visible on the northwest corner of George and Church, and Carson's restaurant on the northeast corner. Signs for businesses are visible on both sides of Church Street beyond George; these include the Hotel Oneco, First New Haven National Bank and Loew's Poli theater. The intersection of Meadow and George Streets can be seen in the right middle ground. The area between Congress Avenue and Commerce and Meadow Streets, visible in the foreground, appears to have been cleared.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. One of a collection of photographs taken by the New Haven Redevelopment Agency to document a massive urban planning and development project undertaken from 1956 through the mid-1970s. The federally-financed redevelopment initiative was realized through a series of projects focused on particular New Haven city neighborhoods identified by street or area names. These projects involved the demolition of old structures and construction of new buildings, roadways and other facilities. Much of the area involved in the Church Street project had been characterized by a mix of small stores, restaurants, theaters and residences. In the course of redevelopment, whole blocks were demolished to make way for larger modern structures such as department stores, hotels, office buildings, a mall and the New Haven Coliseum. A 1950 city directory map shows that Congress Avenue and Meadow Street once intersected with George and Church Streets. Commerce Street does not appear on current maps, and appears to have occupied part of the area cleared to make way for the Oak Street Connector.
