One

New
Haven
Redevelopment
Agency
to
document
a
massive
urban
planning
and
development
project
undertaken
from
1956
through
the
mid-1970s
. The
federally-financed
redevelopment
initiative
was
realized
through
a
series
of
projects
focused
on
particular
New
Haven
city
neighborhoods
identified
by
street
or
area
names
. These
projects
involved
the
demolition
of
old
structures
and
construction
of
new
buildings
,
roadways
and
other
facilities
. The
Fair
Haven
redevelopment
area
was
comprised
of a
residential
,
commercial
and
industrial
area
east
of the
Mill
River
.
Fair
Haven
was not
always
a
part
of
New
Haven
, and
merged
most
recently
in
1870
.
It
was a
center
for
oystering
throughout
the
nineteenth
century
and into the
twentieth
.
Shipbuilding
and
other
industries
also
supported
the
economy
.
Redevelopment
efforts
in the
Fair
Haven
project
area
focused
on
run-down
housing
,
commercial
and
industrial
areas
.
Part
of a
complex
formerly
occupied
by
Federal
Paper
Board
Company
that was
acquired
for
redevelopment
.
