Description	View of commercial buildings and storefronts on Grand Avenue near Clinton Avenue, in the Fair Haven redevelopment area, New Haven. At left, Cassela's [?] Liquor Store and Alma's Beauty Salon occupy a one-story brick storefront that appears to have been added to the front of a wood building. Taylor's occupies the ground floor of a three-story brick building to the right. A neon "RX" sign projects over the street. Signs above the Taylor's storefront advertise Loft candies, greeting cards, cosmetics and expert prescriptions. Buildings in a variety of styles and materials can be seen farther down the block. Cars are parked on both sides of the street.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. One of a collection of photographs taken by the New Haven Redevelopment Agency to document a massive urban planning and development project undertaken from 1956 through the mid-1970s. The federally-financed redevelopment initiative was realized through a series of projects focused on particular New Haven city neighborhoods identified by street or area names. These projects involved the demolition of old structures and construction of new buildings, roadways and other facilities. The Fair Haven redevelopment area was comprised of a residential, commercial and industrial area east of the Mill River. Fair Haven was not always a part of New Haven, and merged most recently in 1870. It was a center for oystering throughout the nineteenth century and into the twentieth. Shipbuilding and other industries also supported the economy. Redevelopment efforts in the Fair Haven project area focused on run-down housing, commercial and industrial areas.
