Description	View looking across an intersection at a new three-story building in the Oak Street redevelopment area, New Haven. 'WNHC" can be seen at the third floor level on the side of the building. Storefronts facing the intersecting street at the ground-floor level have signs reading (left to right): "The WOMAN'S Shop", "PAULINE'S CORSET and/LINGERIE SHOP", "KING n QUEEN CHILDREN'S/SHOPPE" and "Sophisticates". A sign for the radio station WNHC can be seen on the exterior wall of the building down the street to the right.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. One of a collection of photographs taken by the New Haven Redevelopment Agency to document a massive urban planning and development project undertaken from 1956 through the mid-1970s. The federally-financed redevelopment initiative was realized through a series of projects focused on particular New Haven city neighborhoods identified by street or area names. These projects involved the demolition of old structures and construction of new buildings, roadways and other facilities. Oak Street extended from Congress Avenue to Howe Street, two blocks south of George Street. The Oak Street neighborhood was an early and major target of redevelopment. It was an ethnically diverse area of shops, restaurants, residences and family businesses. The perception of it as a gritty neighborhood with decayed housing stock caused planners to seek to substantially reconfigure and transform the area. Oak Street and other roadways and buildings entirely disappeared, replaced by the new Oak Street Connector and modern commercial and residential structures. Based on other images depicting the same building, intersection is probably the northwest corner of College Street and North Frontage Road.
