Redevelopment
Agency
to
document
a
massive
urban
planning
and
development
project
undertaken
from
1956
through
the
mid-1970s
. The
federally-financed
redevelopment
initiative
was
realized
through
a
series
of
projects
focused
on
particular
New
Haven
city
neighborhoods
identified
by
street
or
area
names
. These
projects
involved
the
demolition
of
old
structures
and
construction
of
new
buildings
,
roadways
and
other
facilities
.
Oak
Street
extended
from
Congress
Avenue
to
Howe
Street
,
two
blocks
south
of
George
Street
. The
Oak
Street
neighborhood
was an
early
and
major
target
of
redevelopment
.
It
was an
ethnically
diverse
area
of
shops
,
restaurants
,
residences
and
family
businesses
. The
perception
of
it
as a
gritty
neighborhood
with
decayed
housing
stock
caused
planners
to
seek
to
substantially
reconfigure
and
transform
the
area
.
Oak
Street
and
other
roadways
and
buildings
entirely
disappeared
,
replaced
by the
new
Oak
Street
Connector
and
modern
commercial
and
residential
structures
.
Based
on
other
images
depicting
the
same
building
,
intersection
is
probably
the
northwest
corner
of
College
Street
and
North
Frontage
Road
.
