Description	View of commercial buildings facing the New Haven Green, on Chapel Street, New Haven. Signs indicate businesses in the first and second floors of two of the commercial buildings, including (from left to right) a shoe store, Cosmo Hosiery, Martha Urat[?], a "NO/APPOINTMENT" hairdresser, M-A-C Loans, Adler's Card N Party Shop (advertising Hallmark cards), and Eddy Bros. Clothiers. The building to the left is numbered "938". A taller commercial building, apparently the Lincoln Building, is partially visible at far right. A sign painted on the east side of the building reads: 'DURFEE[?]/House of fashion". A sign advertising J.B.[?] SIMPSON/TAILORS can be seen in a third story window. A sign in the window below reads "HOUSEHOLD/FINANCE". A fence bordering New Haven Green can be seen in the foreground. Cars are parked on both sides of Chapel Street.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. Dated March 1962. One of a collection of photographs taken by the New Haven Redevelopment Agency to document a massive urban planning and development project undertaken from 1956 through the mid-1970s. The federally-financed redevelopment initiative was realized through a series of projects focused on particular New Haven city neighborhoods identified by street or area names. These projects involved the demolition of old structures and construction of new buildings, roadways and other facilities. Parts of Chapel Street were included in the Church Street project. Areas affected by redevelopment as part of this project had been characterized by a mix of small stores, restaurants, theaters and residences. As redevelopment proceeded, whole blocks were demolished to make way for larger modern structures such as department stores, hotels, office buildings, a mall and the New Haven Coliseum.
