a
massive
urban
planning
and
development
project
undertaken
from
1956
through
the
mid-1970s
. The
federally-financed
redevelopment
initiative
was
realized
through
a
series
of
projects
focused
on
particular
New

city
neighborhoods
identified
by

names
. These
projects
involved
the
demolition
of
old
structures
and
construction
of
new
buildings
,
roadways
and
other
facilities
.
Oak
Street
extended
from
Congress
Avenue
to
Howe
Street
,
two
blocks
south
of
George
Street
. The
Oak
Street
neighborhood
was an
early
and
major
target
of
redevelopment
.
It
was an
ethnically
diverse
area
of
shops
,
restaurants
,
residences
and
family
businesses
. The
perception
of
it
as a
gritty
neighborhood
with
decayed
housing
stock
caused
planners
to
seek
to
substantially
reconfigure
and
transform
the
area
.
Oak
Street
and
other
roadways
and
buildings
entirely
disappeared
,
replaced
by the
new

and
modern
commercial
and
residential
structures
. The
building
depicted
seems
to be the
same
one
as that
identified
on a
Yale
University
web
site
as the
Institute
of
Human
Relations
and
Sterling
Hall
of
Medicine
as
it
appeared
after
1931
.
Grace-New
Haven
Community
Hospital
was
formed
by a
merger
of
Grace

in
1945
. The
complex
is
currently
located
in the
area
between
Congress
Avenue
and
Howard
Street
south
of
North
Frontage
Road
.
