Description	View of the doorway to a three-story building identified as an Olin/Winchester entryway in the Dixwell Avenue redevelopment project area, New Haven. The doorway is in a section of the building that faces a street corner diagonally. A sign above reads "Olin/WINCHESTER - WESTERN/DIVISION". A larger six-story building that may be adjoining is visible in the background. A traffic light can be seen over the intersection.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. Dated March 1975. One of a collection of photographs taken by the New Haven Redevelopment Agency to document a massive urban planning and development project undertaken from 1956 through the mid-1970s. The federally-financed redevelopment initiative was realized through a series of projects focused on particular New Haven city neighborhoods identified by street or area names. These projects involved the demolition of old structures and construction of new buildings, roadways and other facilities. Much of the area involved in the Dixwell Project had been characterized by a mix of residences, small stores and businesses. As part of redevelopment, older buildings were demolished to make way for modern structures and centralized shopping plazas. Redevelopment extended beyond Dixwell Avenue proper to surrounding and adjacent areas, including Newhallville, in which The Winchester Repeating Arms/Olin Mathieson Corporation complex was a major presence. The Winchester Repeating Arms Company was founded in New Haven in the mid-nineteenth century. It was purchased in 1931 by Western Cartridge, which later became Olin Industries. Olin merged with Mathieson Chemical in 1954 to become Olin Mathieson Chemical Corporation.
