Description	View looking northwest showing construction under way on the Temple Street parking garage in the Church Street redevelopment project area, New Haven. View is looking toward Temple and Crown Streets. A crane, other equipment, and construction workers are visible on the site. The United Illuminating headquarters building can be seen on the west side of Temple Street north of George Street. The Taft Hotel is partially visible in the background. Other buildings in the downtown area, including Trinity Episcopal Church and the old Malley's department store, can be seen in the center and right background.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. One of a collection of photographs taken by the New Haven Redevelopment Agency to document a massive urban planning and development project undertaken from 1956 through the mid-1970s. The federally-financed redevelopment initiative was realized through a series of projects focused on particular New Haven city neighborhoods identified by street or area names. These projects involved the demolition of old structures and construction of new buildings, roadways and other facilities. Much of the area involved in the Church Street project had been characterized by a mix of small stores, restaurants, theaters and residences. In the course of redevelopment, whole blocks were demolished to make way for larger modern structures such as department stores, hotels, office buildings, a mall and the New Haven Coliseum. As part of this project, a garage was built along Temple Street next to the new Macy's and Malley's department store sites in the blocks between Crown Street and North Frontage Road.
