Description	Aerial view of the Long Wharf redevelopment project area, looking west, New Haven. The Connecticut Turnpike and Oak Street Connector can be seen on the far side of the waterside highway interchange. The new highway bridge at the mouth of the Mill and Quinnipiac Rivers is visible at lower left. The old Joseph B. Sargent hardware company plant can be seen at center.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. Dated March 24, 1963. One of a collection of photographs taken by the New Haven Redevelopment Agency to document a massive urban planning and development project undertaken from 1956 through the mid-1970s. The federally-financed redevelopment initiative was realized through a series of projects focused on particular New Haven city neighborhoods identified by street or area names. These projects involved the demolition of old structures and construction of new buildings, roadways and other facilities. The Long Wharf project area comprised the waterfront along the mouth of the Mill and Quinnipiac Rivers and New Haven harbor. Marshy areas were filled in to accommodate the Connecticut Turnpike (Interstate 95) and new industrial and commercial sites. Several long-time industries housed in older buildings near the waterfront or elsewhere in the city were relocated to new facilities in the Long Wharf area. Hardware manufacturer Joseph B. Sargent brought his company to New Haven in the 1860's, locating his plant near the harbor, close to both rail and water transport. The Sargent and Company complex expanded over time and the firm became one of New Haven's largest employers.
